Spring Giveaway Feature Artist: jellybeans

Today, our mini-spotlight shines on the very talented and successfull, Angie of jellybeans!

Your name & shop(s) name(s).
Angie - shop name: Jellybeans

Whatis your craft and how long?
I paint - I've been doing it all my life since I could. But more recently, I have been selling on Etsy since 2007 - almost going on 3 years!

Esty is part time - I was lucky enough to do it full time during the summer. I'm a full time student studying Medical Radiation Technology - and I start my clinical placement (full time work without pay hehe) in January. I will do that for a year, and then I write my examinations and then I can work.

Etsy has been great - at first it was just to provide money for more art supplies, but now it's paying for my school and living costs, in addition to the supplies.

Where are you located, how do you enjoy spending free time?
I just moved to Orillia Ontario. Since it's winter, I enjoy snowboarding. In the summer I bike a lot. I read tons...and I paint in my free time. It's sort of coincidental: if I wasn't selling my paintings, I'd still be painting. It's a good thing really - because then I never view it as work

What is she giving away?
Any 8x10 print - YOUR choice!

Feature Friday: Lisa of seventytwostitches

Hello hello! It's Halloween Eve - everyone excited for some spooks? Allysattic is super busy with buying a new house so I am taking over this week's Feature Friday (scary, I know)! I took some tips from last week's entry asking for different questions and such, and changed this up a little. Enjoy!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself, your shop, and what brought you to the Etsy community.
Hello! My name is Lisa. I work part-time at Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts. I've been working there for about 6 years. I work only 2 nights a week, and I'm considering quitting and selling on Etsy full time! (More time to crochet!). I live in a cute medium-sized yellow house with my husband, and my 2 very spoiled cats, Ruby and Chester. I would have to say my cats are my inspiration. I started out crocheting toys for them, and I realized, they have more toys than I do! And that the house was slowly getting cluttered with cat toys (I hate clutter). I thought to myself, "Could I really sell these crochet toys? Would people want to buy them?" Once one of my friends (PrettyPeapod) started selling on Etsy that really gave me a push to go for it. So after thinking about it for a while, I jumped in and I joined the Etsy community. I thought I would try it out, and if I didn't like it I would quit. But soon after joining, I became obsessed.

2. Walk us through a typical day in your life.
In the morning I check my e-mail, and pack up any orders and walk to the post office. If I don't have any sales I play on the computer, update my blog, and read my favorite blogs. I also take pictures of new items and get them ready for my shop.

After lunch I start crocheting. Then I attend any virtual lab that are schedule for that day. If not, I continue crocheting. Or I will add new items/renew/relist.

In the evenings, my hubby and I go for a walk, watch a movie and I will do more crocheting. At this time of the day I like to work on projects that are for me, but it usually never happens. Most of the time I'm finishing up items for my shop.

3. What market (group of people) do you see your items being for?
I started out marketing to pets. But then I soon realized my items could be for kids, babies and adults.

4. Name your top three:
- Books
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
The Secret Life of Bees
She's Come Undone

- Music (song or artist)
The Beatles

- Movies or Television shows
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Grey's Anantomy
Supernatural

- Websites
twitter.com
hulu.com
etsy.com (of course!) :)

5. Where do you hope your shop will be in a year?
I hope to hit 100 items in my shop. And continue having fun with it!

6. What is one of your favorite shops on Etsy?
Ohhh.... that's a tough one.
My two favorite shops are www.MelissaSue.etsy.com and www.moonscreations.etsy.com

7. What projects are you currently working on?

I'm still working on Christmas items for the shop. I'm also working on more variety in my shop. For example, different colored elephants, and items with and without bells. When I'm not working on an item for my shop, I'm crocheting a blanket for myself. It's made with 100% wool. It's going to be really nice and warm in the winter. If I finish it before winter that is. :)

8. If you could have one super power - what would it be?
The ability to stop time. So I can get more crocheting done. There needs to be more time in the day!

Happy Halloween!

Member Review

Happy Sunday, Rats!

Just letting you know that Allysattic and I will be review members this week, and deciding on those we feel are not active within the team. Please don't worry, we don't plan on removing people who have made a point of telling us they have been busy or something similar, we are reviewing members who joined the team, but have made absolutely no contributions or efforts to be active within the team.

Those members will be contacted later this week, letting them know of their removal to the team. We want our team to be full of quality members who truly enjoy the team and what it does. It's not about having the largest team, it's about having fabulous members!

Check back tomorrow for Mosaic Monday & enjoy your Sunday!

Wishlist Wednesday: littlebitofpretty

This week Kim (aka: littlebitofpretty) was selected to choose 5 items from etsy that she would buy in half a moment's time if she could. Take a look at her gorgeous collection!

1). Kim's first pick comes from our very own rat, moonthroughfog! Kim says the original acrylic painting has great texture and lovely colors, and loves the zebra-like print to it. She REALLY wants to buy it!

2). This wooden bracelet comes from 3dots is Kim's next pick, she said she loves this bracelet so much she's included in a treasury and really just adores the whole shop.

3). Since Pride and Prejudice is Kim's favorite book, the Mr. Darcy Proposal mug from Brookish is right up Kim's alley. Jane Austen is her favorite author, and she says she might just have to buy the whole set.

4) Despite having nowhere to wear it, Kim really wants isadoraclothing's Chameleon Full Length customizable gown. The material (rayon jersey) would be super soft and it comes in lots of colors. I might fight you for this one, Kim. This dress is killer!

5) Finally, since Kim is from Canada, she frequently experiences sweater fever and she just wants to buy every sweater and shawl she sees. The Rococo Shawl from TickledPinkKnits is no exception! In a luxurious merino wool/alpaca/silk blend, she really feels like it's self explanatory why she loves it.

Fabulous stuff, littlebitofpretty! I leave you with my favorite item from Kim's shop:

Feature Friday - Malarie from itsastitch, spookychandelier, and MissingColors

I'm sure many of you have wondered about our team leader - and now, the wait is over! Malarie, the head rat herself, has agreed to be today's Feature Friday person! As some of you may know, she currently runs three shops on Etsy: itsastitch, spookychandelier, and MissingColors.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself, your shop, and what brought you to the Etsy community.

My name is Malarie, I'm 22 and a libra; also known as itsastitch (and spookychandelier and MissingColors). I sell, mostly jewelry in itsa & spooky, and clothing/totes/housewares in MissingColors. They all show a side of my personality and style. My main shop, itsastitch, shows my general style, spooky shows my evening attitude and how I like to dress up, MissingColors is the random rockstar side of my personality that comes out every now and then (like when I drink :P). Initially, I heard about Etsy through my very dear friend Lauren (aka: jerseymaids on Etsy). She always talked about how wonderful the community was and how the items are so awesome, so I hopped on in November 2008 to buy Christmas gifts. After admiring shops and building up stock of my own, I thought why not? And the rest, as they say, is history.

2. Besides creating beautiful things for your shop, what do you spend your days doing?

I spend a lot of my day on Etsy, since it's my full time job. I wake up when my boyfriend gets up for work (much to my chagrin). I usually fart around online for a while before I list something. I try to make at least 3 new things each day. I usually have some kind of meeting or phone call to make regarding one of my 3 shops, so I handle those, too. Sometimes I prep for an upcoming photoshoot my boyfriend has, I'm usually his artistic director and fashion stylist. If one of my friends happens to be free, I usually go get sushi and shop with them. My evenings are spent with my man and a delicious dinner that he prepared.

3. What sources do you draw your inspiration from and what is your creative process(es)?

Some of the most random things inspire me. Usually it's just a mood, a song I hear, a piece of jewelry I see that I want to recreate into something different, chatting with friends about what they like, a color that I just HAVE to use. I work at my make-shift corner desk in my apartment. One desk is sewing, the other jewelry and my laptop is over here as well. It's cramped, but I make do. For MissingColors I usually doodle a bunch until I like something then recreate it onto contact paper and use a spray bottle of bleach out on the balcony.

4. What market (group of people) do you see your items being for?

I always wonder this. I would guess, in itsastitch, it's young hipsters. That style is funky, youthful and different. spookychandelier is more classic style, so I imagine it appeals more to the 25 and older crew. MissingColors, I haven't a clue. I could see the totes being used by some young girl with pink hair and a nose piercing at a farmers market.

5. Name your top three:

Books:

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Most horror novels
The Chronicles Of Narnia

Music:

This was really hard, so I picked three artists that I always listen to their entire album without skipping

Prince
Girl Talk
Ferraby Lionheart

Movies/TV:

I'm a TV addict.
The Office
Project Runway
The Simpsons

Websites:

popurls.com
videosift.com
foodnetworkhumor.com

6. What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see added?

I love that we can rearrange our shop, and I love alchemy. The list of things I would add or change is long, but the main thing I can think of is being able to choose the thumbnail that appears when you upload a photo. It is IMMENSELY frustrating when you get great shots and then it looks crappy on the thumbnail.

7. How do you market your work? What has or hasn’t worked for you in the past?

Well, I use twitter a lot. I have a facebook fan page, but I don't update it nearly enough. I don't keep up with my blog, either. BUT, I (obviously) run the Lab Rat team and I am also a member of Etsy Chatters. The teams have been really helpful. I've also gotten a few features in the Gift Guides and Front Page, and I have a couple more exciting things that are going to be rolling out soon, but it's hush hush right now.

8. What do you like most about the Virtual Labs?

I remember the first time I came into a lab I was like what the hell is this? I ended up leaving because I had no idea what was going on; turns out I went in when there wasn't something going on. I came back a month or so later and saw that there is actually scheduled events and came into a Shop Critique session with HeyMichelle. I immediately thought it was rad and came back over and over again. It's a fun way to chat and get great advice from people on the inside.

9. What topics or events would you like to see added to the Virtual Lab offerings?

Well, I would love to have critique sessions for the rats, I feel like I (and some other regs) would have great tips for people. I would also love to have interview sessions with members who have been around on Etsy for a while who would have some great tips for us.

Wishlist Wednesday: Fresh Picks from rathina

This Wednesday the lovely rathina was randomly selected to pick any 5 items of her choosing from Etsy. Here goes!

1). First item comes from LittleSidekick. This is her Cotton Crochet Monkey Hat for 0-24mths. rathina says her son would look just adorable in it, and I'm totally betting she is right!

2). This Stained Glass Kitty Business Card Holder comes from Glass2Class and rathina calls it adorable, and says she just loves cats!

3). Continuing to show her love for cats, rathina chooses woodnamesandmore's Custom Corner Cats for her home, saying hubby limits her to 2 kitties so these would be the perfect way to sneak in more.

4). PoshDots' Sea Dreams Hand Painted Wooden Letters would look fabulous in rathina's soon to be finished under the sea master suite, saying she loves these letters by this talented artist.

5). Finally, being a big scrabble fan this Scrabble Family Pillow from designlab443 is going to be bought as soon as rathina's family grows, she says.

Great items, rathina. I'll wrap this up with a lovely switch plate from your shop!

Rat Spotlight

Happy Sunday, Rats. I know most of you are still in bed, but it's nearly 9am where I am so it's rise and shine.

I wanted to speak out on a feature we just added to the blog. If you scroll down the sidebar, you'll see a new piece has been added - the Rat Spotlight. This was a random choosing from our member list (good ol' random.org) for a member's Etsy Mini to appear on the sidebar from Sunday-Sunday. This will be a weekly occurrence, so each person will, eventually, get a chance. This week it is alyssakaycollections.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Sunday & long weekend. Don't forget to scroll down and check out all of the awesome deals some of our members have going on. Check back tomorrow for Mosaic Monday!

Feature Friday - texasbeads and BeadzNBling

Another great week as flown by and it's time for another Feature Friday! And no, I'm not featuring two people this week - I'm featuring one fabulous seller who manages two shops - texasbeads and BeadzNBling.

texasbeads and BeadzNBling, as both names suggest, focus on all things beads. texasbeads is a supply store where the jewelry crafter can find a variety of products. For those who don't make their own jewelry, BeadzNBling is packed full of beautiful, handmade jewelry.

And now onto the questions!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself, your shop(s), and what brought you to the Etsy community.

I was born in frigid Minnesota and went to school for formal art training but somehow was sucked in by Corporate America and never followed my dream until now. I always had my hands in to some sort of artsy crafty goo and the creative juices just never failed me. Since 1992 I owned an Australian Great Barrier Reef Diving Internet Tour Company and just retired from that insanity two years ago, so this is when I started back creating jewelry again and have been doing local shops and fairs. I just only found ETSY mid July after an Indie Show. The girl next to me talked about ETSY all weekend and so I got home, signed up and voila!
My first shop is beadznbling.etsy.com and that opened end July 09, and texasbeads.etsy.com is only a week old and already 9 sales. Beadznbling is OOAK jewelry and the 2nd shop is all about sterling silver gemstone clasps and pendants, beads and beading materials. I LOVE shopping for supplies but either don't have the time to create or the outlet to sell the created items....so best of both worlds here!

2. Besides creating beautiful things for your shop(s), what do you spend your days doing?

I'm back in Texas (for the 4th time) and call it home for good. I absolutely adore creating jewelry and glad to have found ETSY as a platform to display and sell my items. When not 'creating, listing and hopefully selling' I love to play golf, watch sunsets especilly if lucky enough to be on a beach!

3. What sources do you draw you inspiration from and what is your creative process(es)?

I am totally obsessed with water thus the reason most of my items are products of the ocean. Pearls, abalone, shells and so on. My inspiration is usually a certain color and I just take off from there. Now that I am building up supplies for Texasbeads.etsy.com I will have at hand, just about anything I need! Like I said, best of both worlds and loving it!

4. What market (group of people) do you see your items being for?
Lynn kinda didn't answer this one.  :) But, if I may do so for her, I'd say that her jewelry shop, BeadzNBling is filled with beautiful designer pieces of jewelry that are suitable for people from all walks of life and that texasbeads target audience is people who love using quality materials to make their own jewelry works of art.

5. We skipped this question (About your top three books, music, movies, and websites) too.

6. What are your favorite features on Etsy? What new features would you like to see added?

As said before, I adore ETSY...like, where have you been all my life? The people I have dealt with in selling, buying, labs, support, forums etc....all seem to be a certain type of person....I guess we are all alike in that we have 'happy hands' as my mom called them. We love creating, doing, sharing our talents. I'm amazed at some of the fabulous artisans I have seen while cruising ETSY and am more and more impressed as some of the quality each and every day.

7. How do you market your work? What has or hasn't worked for you in the past?

So, how do we get noticed? Thank goodness a re-list is only 20 cents. I think keeping fresh is the key. Once you get past around page 10 or 20 in a search, the buyer gets bored and moves on so list then re-list. Tough to do when you have 100s of products in your shop but I really think that is the key to selling on ETSY.

Want to find out more about relisting? Check out this forum thread for tips and ideas: http://www.etsy.com/forums_thread.php?thread_id=5849800

8. What do you like most about the Virtual Labs?

Virtual Labs..what do I like about them?? Wow, the first day I went in to a lab I was tossed back and gave a big 'what the..'. Couldn't for the life of me figure what was going on, and now that I have been in so many labs (try to visit often as I can) I see the newbies asking all the questions I was too afraid to ask. The chat and chatter, bomb blasting, beer tossing is hysterical let alone the text. Honestly, I see people making friends in these pre lab sessions and I think it's just wonderful. I, myself, have come to really like a few in the labs and they just make me laugh!

9. What topics or events would you like to see added to the Virtual Lab offerings?

Now that you have formed Team Lab Rats, I see great things ahead with the two of you at the helm. I would love to see helpful items discussed and the sharing of ideas/knowledge. What's working, what's not. Things that will help us all get a leg up. Social Networking at it's finest!

Lynn wanted me to let everyone know about the following special offer she's holding to celebrate her Friday Feature! Please read the details down below:

I will offer a free gift with purchase to all Lab Rats! A lovely pair of sterling silver freshwater pearl drop earrings value $15 with a purchase of $20 or more (before shipping) off the Texas Beads site. Good thru Monday 7 Sept. Just mention FREE STUFF FOR LAB RATS in the message to seller box.

Have a fabulous long holiday weekend everybody! Allysattic out. :)

Wishlist Wednesday: Fresh Picks from ZidishaLuxe

It's Wednesday, which means our next installment of Wishlist Wednesday is up! This time around, miss ZidishaLuxe was picked, at random, to select five of her absolute favorite, would buy them in a heartbeat if she could items from Etsy. Her picks:

1). Although ZidishLuxe couldn't think of a place or event to wear the Pink Pod Convertable Tulip Dress by attiladesign, she'd buy this simply gorgeous piece without a second thought!

2) Having a soft spot for vintage boots, these Oxford Equestrian Ankle Boots from MissKittenVintage, ZidishaLuxe just loves these way cute shoes. Looks like someone else loved them, too. Sold out!

3) ZidishaLuxe loves this Technicolor Romper by ruffeoheartslilsnoty, calling it oh so fly.

4) PonderandStitch's adorable Postcard Sentiment Cuff is one of ZidishLuxe's favorite finds on Etsy, saying that the connection the words have spans over time.

5) And finally, this pick comes from our very own WorksInProgress, her sea. love. ring that ZidishaLuxe calls, "perfect for her". Between Zidisha's love of Poe and this song, it had to be in her top five.

So ends another Wishlist Wednesday. Thanks to ZidishaLuxe for her beautiful picks, I'll leave you with an item I love from Zidisha's shop!
