Introducing..... our Lab Rats Team Welcome To Our Newest Members!
Introducing......... Our newest members for October!
Introducing....
1. What is your given name? (If you are only comfortable giving your first name that is fine.)
Heather Flanagan
2. How long have you been on Etsy (includes the time you were NOT a seller).
Oh, about two years, I think.
4. Which item in your shop is your favorite?
Oh, this one, without a doubt .... my orange handwoven silk scarf.
The color is wonderful, and the drape of the scarf is just perfect.
5. What do you enjoy doing when not creating for your shop?
Messing with my cats, reading fantasty, sci-fi, and/or trashy romance, hugging my sweetheart, that kind of thing. Essentially I'm a home-body and would rather be here crafting than doing anything else. I also volunteer (and might even get paid some day!) as coordinator for an information technology project called COmanage funded by the NSF and Internet2.
6. What question would you like to ask your new teammates?
What are your favorite colors? I like to know 'cause it helps me think about what colors I'll be using next for my scarves!
Introducing....
FunkyMonkeyCreations

I enjoy life itself and take advantage of all it offers me. Dancing, writing, being with people I love, hiking, creating just to create, enjoying nature in all its' forms, listening to and making music, singing, swimming; these are just a few of my favorite things to do if I'm not creating for my shop.
6. What question would you like to ask your new teammates?
I would like to ask my new teammates: What would you like to see me make more of? Either something new (I enjoy being challenged with a new design) or more of something that I'm already selling (perhaps more bottle-cap necklaces?).

Partner Critiques!
We all attend the virtual labs and help new sellers learn to hone their shops. With the holidays rapidly approaching let's take the opportunity to share a critique with a teammate!
You will have the opportunity to share your critique with the whole team at the next Lab Rats Team meeting, if you choose.
The pairing up of participants will be done by AuntKarensCreations and Eccolights.
This is going to be great fun! C'mon and join the fun!

Helping a friend. |
This week we will pair up those of you who would like a shop critique! To get a partner, just comment on this post with what you would like to have critiqued. Give the url to the item or profile etc... We will pair up shops and email or convo each of you as to who your partner is. Then you will have 5 days to do your critique. In the October team meeting you will have the option to share the results with other teammates but otherwise they stay private. Please complete your critique - your partner is counting on you for help.
Don't feel "qualified" to critique? Think like a buyer! What would get you to buy from your partner? Plus we have a great guide for you to use in your critique.
Use this link to give yourself a guideline for doing a critique:

Feature Friday
Please extend a warm welcome to our Feature Friday artist of the week, Trish, from pixiedustfineries
Where can we find you?
http://www.pixiedustfineries.com/
1) Tell us about yourself, your shop and what brought you to the Etsy community.
1) Tell us about yourself, your shop and what brought you to the Etsy community.
Office and Packaging |
My name is Patricia however I go by Trish, I am 52 years old, married, a mother of two beautiful daughters, and I have three wonderful grandchildren one girl and two boys. I live in Arlington, Texas, which has been my home since 1984, prior to that I was all over the world, my Dad was in the Army. I worked in the corporate world as an Office Manager from 1975, until I lost my job in January 2007. I originally started making jewelry for my family for Christmas, but I loved it so much I started selling on Etsy in March 2008. I started selling on Ebay (hated it) and then my daughter told me about Etsy, I checked it out and I was hooked.
I have always loved jewelry and I love the relationship that women have with their jewelry. It makes us feel beautiful, feminine, and powerful. It affects us in many ways, and even if a piece does not cost thousands of dollars, it is still precious to us.
2) Walk us through a typical day in your life.
I usually start at 8:00am, sometimes earlier, I stop by the kitchen to get a diet coke or coffee and then into my office.
I start out checking emails, once that is finished I begin to take pictures of items made the previous day and then I relist one item and list a new item every day. Once they are listed, then I start my marketing…twitter, facebook, Etsy Forums, stumbleupon, etc. that pretty much takes me into lunchtime. While eating lunch, I prepare the previous day’s orders for shipping.
Next, I will start working on my next project, this week it is Breast Cancer Awareness Jewelry items. I work on projects until 3:00pm, and then take packages to post office, return to projects until 5:15pm, cook dinner, rest until 6:30pm.
3) Name your top 3:
Books…
I do not have a favorite book, but I have favorite authors, all are Mystery writers…Mary Higgins Clark, Iris Johansen, Patricia Cornwell
Music...
Everything Country and some of the 1970’s Rock
TV...
I have so many favorites, but Lost was my number 1, Greys Anatomy, Brothers and Sisters, and anything on HGTV Channel.
Web sites...
Well the first one is easy Etsy, Face Book, Pogo Games (when I need to get away)
4.) What are your top 3 shops on Etsy?
I have many favorites, I do not think I can pick just three, and there are so many talented people on Etsy. Nope, can’t just pick three, sorry.
5.) What projects are you currently working on?
I am concentrating on Breast Cancer Awareness (BCA) Jewelry right now; I am going to run a sale on them thru the month of October, which is BCA month. My sister is a BC Survivor, and I lost both of my parents to Cancer so awareness is very important to me.
6.) Where do you hope your shop will be in a year?
Wedding Collection |
Like everyone else, I hope to be a successful shop with daily sales. In addition, I hope to improve my skills by going to workshops. I recently attended two wire wrapping class and really liked it.
I have created my own Bridal line called “Aglow” and I have already had good success with it, I have done jewelry for four weddings ranging from two bridesmaids to twelve bridesmaids. I see myself concentrating more on Bridal jewelry and bridal shows.
7.) What suggestions/tips would you offer to someone new to Etsy?
Come to the Virtual Labs you can get tons of information from them. Be patient. Do not just list and item and then sit and wait for a sale, you have to work for it; you have to get your name out there. Focus on what you love and you will be successful.

Feature Friday
Please extend a warm welcome to our
Feature Friday artist Angela from Gizecraft
Blog: http://gizecraft.blogspot.com
Etsy : http://gizecraft.etsy.com
1) Tell us about yourself, your shop and what brought you to the Etsy community.
Besides fabric, I love working with colourful papers, batik and Japanese papers. I love travelling and I try to collect different types of papers everywhere I go.
3) Name your top 3:
Books
1. Sophie’s world by Jostein Gaarder
2. The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Immortality by Milan Kundera
3. Perfume by Patrick Suskind
Music
1. Classical Jazz
2. Antonio Pinho Vargas (Portuguese composer and pianist)
3. Ennio Morricone (Italian composer and conductor)
5) Where do you hope your shop will be in 1 year?
It is not easy in the beginning because you want sales and when it doesn’t come, you become disappointed and want to give up. That is not the right thinking because it means that you need to work harder, take new photos and get more active in virtual labs, read all the information available and get to know the lovely people in Etsy. Everyone is going through the same directions and once you have everything worked out, people will notice you and your items. But the most important is to be kind, respect and enjoy!
Feature Friday artist Angela from Gizecraft
Blog: http://gizecraft.blogspot.com
Etsy : http://gizecraft.etsy.com
1) Tell us about yourself, your shop and what brought you to the Etsy community.
My name is Angela and I live in Portugal between Lisbon, Braga (north of Portugal) and Macau (China). I speak English, Cantonese and Portuguese. I have always loved creating things. My mom was a professional tailor from a traditional sewing business family in Goa (Portuguese colony in India). Then my parents moved to Macau, where I was born. I used to help my mom and she would give me the leftovers pieces of beautiful fabrics to make dresses for my dolls. That was my first contact with fabrics.
Besides fabric, I love working with colourful papers, batik and Japanese papers. I love travelling and I try to collect different types of papers everywhere I go.
But it was only when I moved with my husband to Lisbon 5 years ago that I started to concentrate in my creativity such as natural perfume making, ceramic, sewing and bookbinding. I found myself in need of connecting with people related to arts and crafts. During that time, “Google” became my best friend! hahaha! I discovered Etsy and it opened the door to the world of talented artist of unique handmade products. I started to join the virtual labs and met nice people who would take their time to give me a help with my shop, offer opinions and exchange ideas. Finally, I felt at home, even though I was far away from home.
2) Walk us through a typical day in your life.
I love to start my day quiet and peaceful with the music on. I go out for coffee with my husband. We have some quality time together, reading the newspaper, talking and laughing. I love mornings because I feel fresh and it’s a new day to start something fresh and new.
Then, I start my day working, creating things with ideas that I have already constructed and visualized in my mind. I do my research online, update my blog, facebook and twitter. I am a good observer and love to go to shops and look for ideas and inspiration. I work best in the afternoon when I have all my materials and ideas well organized.
The whole process of bookbinding takes time and it gives me a Zen feeling because it is so beautiful to be able to sew up the books, create a unique style with lovely materials like Portuguese cork oak, silk fabrics or leather. After the completion of the whole process, I take a good look at the book and get this feeling of great satisfaction! And I smile with great joy!
3) Name your top 3:
Books
2. The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Immortality by Milan Kundera
3. Perfume by Patrick Suskind
Music
1. Classical Jazz
2. Antonio Pinho Vargas (Portuguese composer and pianist)
3. Ennio Morricone (Italian composer and conductor)
1. Amélie
2. Cinema paradiso
3. Life is Beautiful
Websites
1. http://www.tortagialla.com/
2. http://elsita.typepad.com/allaboutpapercutting/
3. http://www.scoutiegirl.com/
4) Who are your top 3 shops on Etsy?
1. http://woodlandbelle.etsy.com
2. http://astellamelu.etsy.com
3. http://vanittas.etsy.com
I have been creating lots of different things. Finally, now I am confident in what I really love to create and it comes from my innermost feeling. I want to focus in my bookbinding books and journals. Therefore, in one year’s time, I hope to be able to create unique designs using the best materials that I can obtain from all parts of the world. I want to create personal books, intimate writings journals. I believe we all have something to write about our lives so that one day we can re-read and treasure memories!
6) What projects are you currently working on?
At the moment, I am working with Portuguese cork oak material which is one of the highest products produced in Portugal. I have become obsessed with this beautiful material and have lots of amazing ideas that I want to share with the world. I have already created my first collection and soon there will be more designs coming up.
7) What suggestions/tips would you offer to someone new to Etsy?

Crafting is being able to bring out the talent we have, in the form of art. With lots of love and patience, almost everything can be achieved.
